Flight Simulation Workstation

Description

NGB is a flight simulation workstation, designed around a 8-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor and a RTX 5080 16GB video card.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 8-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor and a RTX 5080 16GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation that would last a long time.

This build was designed for serious flight simulation and pilot training, using Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, PilotEdge, SimBrief, Navigraph, and Meta Quest Link / OpenXR.

Stability and smooth frame delivery was more important than maximum FPS, as well as connectivity for physical flight controls (yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder pedals, radio panels).

This build is similar to our 4K/144hz Flight Simulator Gaming Computer.

Design Rationale

  • The Ryzen 7 9800X3D gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for lightly-threaded workloads, and multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, a 360mm cooler is recommended
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality.
  • We recommended 64GB of RAM, knowing the software used and future plans.
  • The customer mostly agreed with our storage recommendation, opting for Gen5 for a small cost increase.
  • We recommended an RTX 5080 based on the requirements.
  • We recommended a 1000W power supply based on the overall design of the build.
  • We used our larger mid-tower case to fit the parts and give solid airflow.
