Description

Cookie Monster is part of a set of 3 CAD workstations.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 12-core i7-12700K processor and an RTX A2000 12GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation to handle their growing professional workload. This system is designed for use in Global Mapper, Trimble Business Center, and Civil 3D.

Systems in this order include Bunsen & Beaker, Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch.

Processor (CPU): Intel i7-12700K

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 AORUS PRO

Memory: Kingston Fury Beast 2x32GB DDR5-4800

Storage (SSD): Kingston KC3000 512GB

Storage (SSD): Kingston KC3000 1TB

Video Card (GPU): Nvidia RTX A2000 12GB

Power Supply (PSU): Enermax Revolution DF 850W 80+ Gold

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow Black

Fans: 3x Noctua NFF12 PWM Black

Design Rationale

  • The i7-12700K gave the customer a great amount of single-core and multi-core performance for regular CAD workloads. Heavier workloads would be tasked to the i9 builds.
  • Our default dual-tower air cooler was quite adequate for the i7, and it made the machine more reliable.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality.
  • The customer wanted at least 64GB of RAM.
  • The customer was fine with our default storage setup.
  • For maximum stability in their CAD workflow, a professional video card was recommended. As the heavier LIDAR workloads were being handled by i9+A4000 systems, an A2000 12GB was fine here.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 850W Gold power supply was recommended.
  • We used our default mid-tower case to fit the Z690 motherboard
  • We used high-pressure fans to ensure proper cooling for the overall build.
