Description

Heartwork is a video editing workstation, designed around a 16-core i7-13700K processor and an RTX 4070Ti 12GB video card.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 16-core i7-13700K processor and an RTX 4070Ti 12GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time. This build was designed for visual effects.

This system is designed in particular for Photoshop, Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, and various apps from Luminar and Topaz.

This build was influenced by our i7 Game Development Workstation.

Design Rationale

  • The i7-13700K gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for editing, and multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, air cooling with a dual-tower cooler is recommended. Liquid cooling is more powerful, but not needed for this customer.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality.
  • The customer wanted at least 64GB of RAM, and didn’t want last-gen tech. 128-192GB was an easy upgrade in the future.
  • The customer requested upgrading the OS drive to 1TB, and was otherwise fine with our default storage setup.
  • We recommended a single RTX 4070Ti for editing and rendering performance.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 1000W power supply was recommended.
  • We used our default mid-tower case to fit the build.
  • We used our default fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.

Customer Review

“I had a great experience with Top Flight. I had been limping along on a machine that was outdated and underpowered for my business, and as my workload changed and increased it was clearly costing me $$ because it was slowing my editing time.

The advantage of having someone like Top Flight spec and build your machine instead of buying a bunch of parts and doing it yourself is, Chris takes the time to talk to you about your specific needs, what software you use and things that YOU need in a machine instead of a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

It was also important to me to have a reasonable amount of future-proofing so that I had a room to upgrade in the future without having to start from scratch.

My workflow now is not even in the same universe as before. If you edit video, you probably know the pain of having to build proxies just to edit, then export can take forever. I now work with log footage straight out of a Sony A7S3 and can scrub through 100% smoothly, I’ve not created a proxy since I got this machine.

And my video exports went from approx 1.5 hours to 30 seconds. Yes you read that correctly, 30 SECONDS.

Granted my old machine was older and slower than average, but this machine cranks out video exports without the fan even ramping up, and that’s with sharpening and noise reduction.”
