This build is designed around a 32-core Threadripper 3970X processor and twin RTX 2080Ti 11GB video cards.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This system is designed in particular for Houdini and Redshift.

This was one of our former tech consultants favorite orders, now memorialized in The Johnson Process.

Design Rationale

  • The Threadripper 3970X gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for modeling, and multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, air cooling with a single-tower cooler is recommended. Liquid cooling is more powerful, but not quite as reliable.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality.
  • The customer wanted at least 128GB of RAM, 256GB was an easy upgrade.
  • The customer requested a 1TB NVME and 4TB HDD.
  • Due to pricing on Quadro models, and not needing more than 12GB VRAM, we used RTX 2080Ti blower cards.
  • To allow for 2 more 2080Ti cards to be added, we used dual power supplies in this build. These can not be used on the same regular 120V circuit.
  • We used a special full-tower case to fit the build.
  • We used our high-end fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.
