Description

JARVIS is a laser scanning workstation, designed around a 24-core i9-13900K processor and an RTX 4090 24GB video card.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 24-core i9-13900K processor and an RTX 4090 24GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new 3D laser scanning workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This build was designed for photogrammetry and LIDAR processing, specifically for ESRI Drone2MAP, DJI Terra, DJI Media Maker, and Premiere Pro.

This build is based on our i9 Laser Scanning Workstation.

Design Rationale

  • The i9-13900K gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for lightly-threaded loads, and multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, liquid cooling with a 360mm liquid cooler is recommended.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality and 10G networking.
  • The customer wanted to max the build out with 192GB RAM. They understood that heavier LIDAR might require another machine with more RAM.
  • The customer requested a 2TB NVME OS drive, 2x4TB RAID0 NVME main drive, and redundant backup storage of 8TB.
  • The customer preferred the RTX 4090 for maximum general-purpose GPU compute, and a very high amount of VRAM.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 1200W power supply was recommended.
  • We used our bigger mid-tower case to fit the build.
  • We used our highest-end fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.

Customer Review

“We needed a computer capable of processing photogrammetry and LiDAR data. Our old workstation would take hours to process data which is fine since it’s all machine time.

That said, the times the old device took was still frustrating, especially if the process crashed for some reason. The real frustrating part was viewing and working with the raw data and the finished product once it was processed.

I heard of Top Flight Computers before so thought I’d reach out to Chris.

Not only is it the device Top Flight Computers built lightning fast with processing tasks, when viewing the data, the rendering speed is also lightning fast and that is probably the biggest advantage to be honest.

We can efficiently work with the data now! This isn’t just a slight upgrade from her old device, this is probably a 100x fold increase in speed. I haven’t done any actual speed comparison test but don’t need to. It’s that fast.

Just one example…when viewing the same large LiDAR set on her old device, it would take sometimes up to 5 minutes to render the view. The new computer that you built renders the view in under a second.

Panning, zooming, zooming around on the same dataset is effortless. On the old device, she would avoid panning/zooming because of rendering time.

Very happy with the computer and working with Chris Touchberry was an easy, smooth, professional, experience. Chris cares about his customers and has reached out several times asking if the device has met expectations.

If we need, or I know of someone else who is in need, of a top-of-the-line PC, I’d highly recommend Top Flight Computers and Chris.”
