This build is designed around a 4-core i5-4690K processor and a GTX 970 4GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a new general workstation that could be upgraded fairly easily and was as reliable as possible.

While not a brand-new system, this build does have a few key components for long-term upgrades. Several existing parts were reused in this build to keep cost down.

This build was purchased as a set with Brent.

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 4

Motherboard: (existing) LGA1150 ATX

Memory: (existing) 2x8GB DDR3

Storage (SSD): Samsung 860 EVO 1TB

Video Card (GPU): (existing) GTX 970 4GB

Power Supply (PSU): EVGA G5 650W

Case: (existing) Rosewill Prism

Fans: 3x Phanteks PH-F120MP

Design Rationale

  • We used the existing CPU.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, air cooling with a single-tower cooler is recommended. Dual-tower and 360mm AIO options are better, but not needed.
  • We used the existing motherboard.
  • We used the existing memory.
  • The customer was fine with a single 1TB SSD.
  • We used the existing video card.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 650W power supply was recommended.
  • We used the existing case.
  • We used our default fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.
