Description

Steelhead is a laser scanning workstation, designed around a 24-core i9-14900K processor and an RTX 4080 16GB video card.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 24-core i9-14900K processor and an RTX 4080 16GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This build was designed for laser scanning, photogrammetry, and CAD, specifically for Metashape, Geocue LP360, Rock Robotics Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

This build was influenced by our i9 Laser Scanning Workstation.

Design Rationale

  • The i9-14900K gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for editing, and multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, liquid cooling with a 420mm liquid cooler is recommended.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality.
  • The customer wanted at least 128GB of RAM, 192-256GB was an easy upgrade.
  • The customer requested a 1TB NVME OS drive, 4TB NVME main drive, and 18TB HDD backup drive.
  • The customer preferred the RTX 4080 for near-maximum general-purpose GPU compute, and a large amount of VRAM.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 1200W power supply was recommended.
  • We used our bigger mid-tower case to fit the build.
  • We used our highest-end fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.

Customer Review

“Bought a custom PC primarily for LiDAR and photogrammetric processing.

The team was very communicative, gave me a suite of options, and kept me updated throughout the process. I would definitely recommend.”
