General System Design

This custom water cooled workstation is designed around two 32-core Xeon Platinum 8358 processors and an RTX A6000 48GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This system is designed in particular for Faro Scene, Geomagic Design X, Syncro4D, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Inventor, Revit, Recap, 3DS Max, Navisworks, and AutoCAD.

This customer also purchased DEVR 1 and Accelerated Design.

Design Rationale

  • Xeon Scalable gives the customer the biggest and most cost-effective RAM capacity possible, in addition to having AVX512 support.
  • Custom liquid cooling was installed on the dual CPUs to keep them running as fast as possible. The customer is savvy enough to maintain the loop on their own.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with room for 16 RAM slots, 2 add-in storage expanders, and 2 dual-slot GPUs.
  • The customer needed at least 1TB of RAM for their workload, 512GB was not acceptable. A smart upgrade path to 2TB RAM was appreciated (which is why Threadripper Pro wasn’t chosen).
  • The customer wanted a triple-layer storage setup; 4x2TB NVME RAID0, 4x1TB NVME RAID0, 4x12TB HDD RAID0. This was backed up to a local server, so RAID0 wasn’t a major concern.
  • The customer already had an RTX A6000, so they chose a second one for 96GB VRAM in NVLink. If they didn’t already have an A6000, they would have used 2 RTX A5000s in NVLink.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 1600W Platinum power supply was recommended.
  • We used a special dual-system case to fit the build.
  • We used our highest-performing fans to ensure proper cooling for the overall build.
