The Mighty Penguin is a general workstation.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X processor and an RX 580 8GB video card.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This customer was looking for a new long-term system for use with multiple Linux distributions (Ubuntu/Fedora) while doing video editing and photo editing.

Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 VISION D-P

Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2x32GB DDR4-3200

Storage (SSD): 2x Crucial P5 1TB NVME

Storage (HDD): Western Digital Black 4TB

Video Card (GPU): RX 580 8GB

Power Supply (PSU): Enermax Revolution D.F. 850W 80+ Gold

Case: Fractal Design Meshify 2 Black

Fans: 4x Phanteks F120MP

Design Rationale

  • The Ryzen 9 5900X gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for editing, and multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, air cooling with a dual-tower cooler is recommended. Liquid cooling with a 360mm AIO is better, but not needed.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality and Thunderbolt support.
  • The customer wanted at least 64GB of RAM, 128GB was an easy upgrade.
  • The customer was mostly fine with our default storage setup, upgrading the boot drive from 512GB to 1TB.
  • We used the existing RX 580 video card.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 850W power supply was recommended.
  • We used a bigger mid-tower case to fit the build.
  • We used our default fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.
