Description

The Stig is a visual effects workstation, designed around a 24-core Threadripper 7960X processor and dual RTX 4090 24GB video cards.

General System Design

This build is designed around a 24-core Threadripper 7960X processor and dual RTX 4090 24GB video cards.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a powerful new VFX workstation to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This build was designed for VFX and 3D rendering, primarily used in Cinema 4D, Octane Render, DaVinci Resolve, Blackmagic Fusion, Adobe Suite, Houdini, Autodesk Fusion, and EmberGen.

This build was influenced by our Threadripper 7000 Visual Effects Extreme Workstation.

Design Rationale

  • The Threadripper 7960X gave the customer a great amount of single-core performance for lightly-threaded workloads, multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks, and an upgrade path.
  • To ensure the CPU runs at full speed, liquid cooling with a 360mm liquid cooler is recommended.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with a good amount of desktop functionality, support for dual RTX 4090s, and an upgrade path.
  • The customer was fine with our default memory, 384GB was an easy upgrade.
  • The customer opted for a 4TB Gen4 NVME for OS+main storage, and an 8TB Gen4 NVME for projects and backup.
  • The customer preferred dual RTX 4090s for maximum general-purpose GPU compute, and a large amount of VRAM. Liquid cooling kept the component cost down.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 1600W power supply was recommended.
  • We used a special mid-tower case to fit the build.
  • We used our highest-end fans to ensure proper airflow and static pressure.

Customer Review

“Previously we had just purchased GPUs from Chris @ Top Flight Computers, but this year it was time to upgrade one of our workstations to a Threadripper based platform.

Chris was incredibly patient with the back and forth while we narrowed down a machine that fit our current & future needs.

Kudos to him and the team at Top Flight Computers!”
