Description

Tryscannosaurus Rex is a laser scanning workstation, designed around twin 32-core Xeon Max 9462 processors and twin RTX 4000 SFF ADA 20GB video cards.

General System Design

This build is designed around twin 32-core Xeon Max 9462 processors and twin RTX 4000 SFF ADA 20GB video cards.

Software Workload/Customer Need

This customer needed a set of 6 powerful new workstations to handle their growing professional workload that would last a long time.

This build was designed for processing large reality capture files in FARO scene and rendering animations and massive model assemblies in Autodesk products.

This build was purchased as a set of Tryscannosaurus Rex, Mascanodon, Triscanatops, Saber Tooth Scanner, Pterodascanyl, and Dragonscanzord.

This customer has also purchased Super Tower of Power, DEVR 1, and Accelerated Design.

Design Rationale

  • The dual Xeon MAX 9462 gives the customer a decent amount of single-core performance for lightly-threaded loads, extremely high multicore performance for heavily-threaded tasks, and an extremely high amount of on-CPU HBM cache. This cache allows the user to keep some files directly on the CPU, without having to use the RAM for processing.
  • Custom liquid cooling was installed on the dual CPUs to keep them running as fast as possible. The customer is savvy enough to maintain the loop on their own.
  • The customer wanted a stable motherboard with room for 16 RAM slots, 2 add-in storage expanders, 2 dual-slot GPUs, and a high-end NVME RAID controller. Onboard 10G networking was a plus.
  • The customer requested 2TB of memory in a 16x128GB DDR5-4800 ECC fashion. This allows the user to load very large scans into RAM, and go up to 4TB RAM.
  • The customer wanted a triple-layer storage setup; 4TB NVME RAID0 for OS+programs, 7x4TB NVME RAID0 for main storage, and 5x12TB HDD RAID5 for local backup. This gives the user an extremely potent array for OS, main storage, and local backup.
  • This particular build wouldn’t be doing any heavy GPU workloads, but a high amount of  VRAM for multiple monitors was still considered. We recommended twin RTX 4000 ADA SFF 20GB for their high VRAM and low power requirement.
  • The overall design of the build meant that a 1600W power supply was recommended.
  • We used a special dual-system case to fit the build.
  • We used our highest-performing fans to ensure proper cooling for the overall build.
