Intel Arrow Lake Core Ultra Series 2 CPUs
Nearly 20 years ago, Intel launched their Core line of processors. Now, they are starting a new line of mainstream CPUs called Core Ultra!
These CPUs have new model names and base-level design changes that are far different from what was Core 13th and 14th Gen chips. First, though not necessarily in a negative light, is the removal of Hyperthreading, Intel’s version of simultaneous multithreading that had been in use even before Core was a product family. With this, multi-core performance in the new Core Ultra Series 2 processors should match or beat the old CPUs most of the time. Sometimes, some workloads perform better without SMT!
These new CPUs feature higher base clocks and increased efficiency compared to last-gen models, leading to lower power draw and lower temperatures. Intel is also including their Neural Processing Unit, or NPU, which provides hardware acceleration for certain types of AI operations without, or alongside, a dedicated GPU.
A brand-new Intel Xe-LPG graphics accelerator is present as well. This new chip supports ray tracing and several other DirectX 12 features. GPU performance is roughly 2X compared to previous Intel Core generations, along with upgraded video encoding capabilities.
Core Ultra 200 also supports significantly faster memory, and new DDR5 memory technology “CUDIMM”. Arrow Lake can officially support up to DDR5-6400 at 48GB per DIMM for a 192GB total maximum. Arrow Lake can support 8000-10000 MT/s of DDR5 memory support with CUDIMM. The CUDIMM brings a clock driver for regenerating the clock signal to improve stability and memory frequencies. Reaching 10,000 MT/s might seem too difficult but it’s certainly possible as some memory makers have already started to manufacture high-speed CUDIMMs.
To support these new processors, Intel is also launching a new Z890 chipset. This will enable motherboards for the Intel Core Ultra Series 2 CPUs to provide multiple Thunderbolt 4 or 5 ports, WiFi 6E or 7, and a wide range of PCIe Express lanes, M.2 slots, SATA ports, Ethernet, and more.
